Event Description:
Science on Screen® event brings filmmaker, statewide range and ranching experts, and reindeer to Midwest Theater
On Thurs., Nov. 9, at 7 p.m., the Midwest Theater presents the Science on Screen® event “The Cowboy Life: From the Arctic Circle to the High Plains.”
Prior to the event, starting at 6:15 p.m., live reindeer will greet visitors to the theater.
UNL Professor of Agronomy Walter Schacht will talk about his current research in the Nebraska Sandhills and cool-season grass pasture. The film “Aatsinki: The Story of Arctic Cowboys” will screen, followed by a panel discussion featuring Schacht, filmmaker Jessica Oreck, Sandhills rancher Tom Sanders, Chadron State College Emeritus rangeland scientist Jim O’Rourke, and reindeer rancher Phillip Licking for a panel discussion about the film and livestock herding practices for cattle and reindeer.

The event is FREE*, but freewill donations are encouraged to support the Scottsbluff-Gering Chamber of Commerce Agribusiness Committee scholarship fund.

This film-and-discussion event at the historic Midwest Theater in Scottsbluff is a part of the national Science on Screen program supported by The Coolidge Corner Theater and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The goal of the Science on Screen series is to increase science literacy by creatively pairing screenings of classic, cult, science fiction, and documentary films with lively presentations by notable experts from the world of science and technology. Each film is used as a jumping-off point for a speaker to introduce current research or technological advances in a manner that engages popular culture audiences.
